Bruford’s SOLO SPOTLIGHT #1: ‘Perpetual Change’ by Yes (taken from the album Yessongs,1972)
We kick off the new ‘SOLO SPOTLIGHT’ series with a noisy early salvo from Yes, recorded live in 1972. At that age I was still heavily influenced by the late 1960s London jazz drummer Peter Baker, who later became Ginger Baker of Cream fame. I’d seen and heard Ginger when I was about 14 or 15 years old playing locally in my home town in Kent, England, and it was a transformative experience. I was easy to transform; I’d only been playing a year or two, and knew a bit less than nothing. Every now and then I play his 60s records to make sure I wasn’t dreaming - that he really was that good. He was.
Looking back, I can’t remember what he played, but I can hear the sound of it in my ears now. Bi...

Visit Bill’s online store for exclusive and signed items: www.shorturl.at/adnpq One question the beginning drummer consistently asks is: how do you play that? The answer is approximately nowhere on RUclips. The latter is a sophis...

Visit Bill’s online store for exclusive and signed items: www.shorturl.at/adnpq This is very much a Bruford title: a ‘wooden man singing and a stone woman dancing’ sounds like the blueprint for a classical Japanese puppet show. I remember hearing this for the first time as a young teenage drummer and thinking: “What the hell is going on here?!?! This makes NO sense.” Of course, being young and stupid, I had bought into the Palmer/Bonham/Paice/et al. school of drum soloing, i.e., Faster/Louder/Longer = Better. Thankfully, we all grow up. This solo is a milestone in progressive music, a real gem (despite Dr. Bill’s lovable self-deprecation). Make no mistake, there is genius bubbling up from this 22-yr-old, and I doubt it was merely the coffee and adrenaline. Bravo.

I still remember hearing this for the first time, in my early teens, and thinking: “What in the hell is going on here? This makes NO sense.” The metric of the day had been established by Buddy Rich and carried on by the likes of Carl Palmer, Ian Paice, John Bohnam et al., i.e., Harder/Faster/Longer = Better. Thankfully, maturity wormed its way in (as it does), and I eventually grew to love this solo. Dr. Bill’s comments and any potential shortcomings aside, there is unmistakable genius bubbling up from that 22-year-old lad, God bless ‘im.

I grew up in the 70s and then as now, felt this music and these musicians were never going to be matched in the style they play. Man, what aa group of great players, no weak links in this band. I would have loved to see an isolated drum camera on Bill, you can hear some great drumming going on, and seeing him along with hearing him would have been ideal. Even though this is young Bruford, Bill should be very proud of this band, its music, and his drumming in the band.

Absolutely agree with Bill when he said he likes to hear mistakes in music, it shows risks are being run. We tried to get that through to the drummer in our fusion band at the time, who was a great drummer, but like to play 'safe', and that kept him from achieving his potential.

Just recieved the Bill Bruford box "Make a song and dance", realize I´ve become a 60 year drummer and by that have had enough time to develop my own musical language. But still I realize that Bill Bruford's extraordinary creative ability is present in much of what I do (and what I try to achieve, both as a drummer, bass & guitarplayer, singer and songwriter), despite all the years of playing and all the influences that fill all kinds of music media today. Bill Bruford really is one of a kind! (Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to se Bill live, it would be a dream to get the opportunity to meet/see one of my biggest musical influenses in this lifetime)! Anyway, thank you Bill Bruford for all the music, innovation, ideas, things to work on and musical integrity! Greetings from Roger here from the Swedish West Coast! @BillBruford

I've watched this same bit of video on the King Crimson channel so many times I have lost count. I love Bill's percussion, and I love how they take it up a notch when Adrian joins Bill. It seems to have taken a long time for this music to gain the volume of appreciation it deserves. Friends used to give me a hard time being a huge KC fan in the early days, but I understand that the Beat tour sold out very quickly, and they are doing a lot of gigs.

Your evaluation is, as usual, accurate, self-deprecating, and reflective. This is in keeping with the established English tradition of not patting oneself on one's back. What you missed, however, was that this solo was amazingly precocious for a 22 year-old. When I first heard it, I was a 15-year old drummer, and it sailed right over my head. "What the hell is he trying to do here?" I asked. "Where are the bombastics? The double bass patterns? The amazingly fast singles?" Little did I know that this solo was an inventive piece of rebellion in a world of musical overkill. It was a flash of brilliance wrapped in brevity. There are elements here of the solo you were doing in 1971; you imported the best bits, trimmed the fat, and went many places in a little over 2 minutes. You showed us glimpses of jazz and rock phrasing, and then took us out at the end like a cannon. Well-done.
